Negotiating Beyond New Year’s Resolutions

Let’s explore a few reasons for this phenomenon and consider some better ways that you can negotiate beyond resolutions for better outcomes.

Not Tying Our Resolutions to our Bigger Vision

Were most of your resolutions specific ‘task-oriented’ items? If so, you’re not alone. But changing your long-time patterns is tricky if you don’t tie them to your bigger dreams and desires. The first step in this negotiation is getting clarity around your desires. Make a decision to live into your most extraordinary life and be clear about what that looks like for you.

Do you have total clarity for what you desire at this stage of your life? If not, take the time to explore and answer that question. If you’re not sure what you want, you’ll fall victim to an ongoing patter of randomness.

Not Tapping into Our Big Why

Tied to your bigger vision, is exploring your deeper ‘why’. Knowing why something matters to you is key in any effective negotiation. Rather than focusing on task-driven items in isolation, dig deeper to consider why that particular item drives you. It’s your deeper ‘why’ that will give you the inspiration and energy to live into your desires.

Breaking Our Promises to Ourselves

Our brains try to give us what they think we want. When we consistently break our promises to ourselves, our brain becomes trained to disregard those promises, believing the goals are not genuinely held. And so, it ignores them, thinking that’s our true heart’s desire.

You need to retrain your brain to take your goals seriously. The two steps above will help with this. i.e. get clarity around your desires and tap into your deeper why for the inspiration to take action on your journey to fulfil your life’s vision.

Not Living With Intention

Most of our failures in life come from not being intentional enough. In each moment, you get to choose who you want to show up as. You can choose how you react to each stimulus you’re faced with. You can choose your personal experience every moment of every day.

Rather than letting life happen to you, ensure your life happens for you. The more intention you bring to the table, the more you’ll take control to live into your best life.

Not Implementing Routines to Manifest Our Desires

Many of us fall victim to living ‘to do’ lives, and sadly, these ‘to do’ items don’t serve to help manifest our desires. The drain us of energy. Instead, seek routines that bring aliveness to you and lift you up on your path to your dream life. Get intentional about setting routines that embody your desires. Your routines should be aligned with your core values and vision. There’s power in making sure the things you do are attached to the outcomes you seek to live into your best future.

Refusing to Surrender

Recognize that not everything will be in your control. Let go of the need for everything to be perfect. And remember that while you can’t control everything that happens, you can choose how you react to it. When you let go of attachment, you open yourself to summon the best version of you. In doing so, you invite the universe to conspire to support you.

Not Creating Space

We’re conditioned to believe that being in perpetual motion is a sign of success. We’ve created an environment where there is an epidemic of chronic fatigue – both physically and mentally. Instead, I invite you to create space in your life. Set aside your phone, laptop, social media, and never-dwindling email inbox. Build space into your life. Space for thinking time. Space for meditation time. Space to talk a leisurely walk in nature. Space to simple ‘be’ with yourself.

Not Curating Your Community

Connection is a basic human desire. Most dissatisfaction with life is about the quality of our relationships. In fact, studies show that longevity is directly connected to the quality of our relationships. Ensure your goals include your relationships. Ensure your routines help to deepen those relationships.

Being intentional about curating your community and inner circle will elevate your life experience and help fast-track your path to your life’s vision and dream. Sometimes the people closest to us, no matter how well-intentioned, sap our energy with their negative input, raising concerns about the myriad of things that could go wrong in pursuing your heart’s desire. Be sure to spend your valuable time with ambitious, generous people who inspire you to be your best.

Considering these simple mission-zappers will help refine your resolutions, by looking beyond them, negotiating your best life so you can achieve what you desire and deserve.
