How to Negotiate Your Best 2024
Hard to believe another year is almost behind us. Is it just me or do they seem to be passing faster and faster. I sometimes wonder if the earth is spinning on its axis more quickly than it did when I was a youngster. Or maybe it’s just that we’re more fully present and engaged in each moment as children. As adults, we get so caught up in handling the myriad of ‘to do’ items on our list each day, that we allow the days to pass without fully experiencing them.
If that sounds familiar, don’t despair. The clock resets in a couple days. I invite you to make a decision – now – to commit to embrace your life going forward, to get intentional about how you’re living your life. Make a decision that you won’t let life happen to you, but instead make life happen for you. Commit to creating your best life.
Here's a few tips on how you can use those days to get more intentional about negotiating and embracing a better 2024 and beyond.
Are you ready for your new beginning?
I Envision Your Perfect Life
You can’t hit a fuzzy target so I first invite you to get clarity on what a perfect life would look like for you. Make a list of everything you can think of that would give you your ultimate dream life.
Don’t worry at this stage about whether you think it’s feasible. Don’t judge your dream. Create your perfect life template as if you could wave a magic wand and make it happen.
II Be Grateful in Advance
Be grateful in advance for the life you want … as if you already had it. Say aloud “I’m grateful that I have …” and list all the items you’ve listed in your ‘perfect life’ scenario from above.
Be sure to be grateful for yourself. Don’t forget to be grateful for the adversity that allowed you to be where you’re at. Acknowledge that you deserve abundance.
Record your own voice with your gratitude for your future life as if it’s already happened so that you can play this back whenever you’re in doubt about your path as the new year unfolds.
III Treat Your Past as Valuable R&D
We can’t go back and change the past. We can move forward, deciding to design our next level of life and to play full out. Consider your past as research and development for the improved quality control of your life from this moment on.
Look back at the things that didn’t go so well for you in 2023. What do you feel you failed at? Never started? Never finished? Failed to do? Procrastinated over? Where you didn’t show up as your best self.
Now, hold each up to the light. Extract what you can learn from it. Recognize that the path to success is through our failures. How can you celebrate these and find the gifts in them? Let go of regrets that don’t serve you. Finding the gems from your mistakes will stretch you to become a better version of yourself.
Then, consider what did work well last year. Give yourself permission to brag on your wins. Give yourself credit for your accomplishments. Be generous with your brag list.
Consider why each win worked and what you can learn from it. Revel in the flood of endorphins from the positive energy of celebrating yourself. Bask in positivity. This will create momentum and carry you forward as you design the blueprint for your life.
IV Release Your Stressors
List anything weighing on you, stressing you, that you want to let go of. Read each aloud, saying “I’m so grateful I released … [list each item you’re releasing].
V Flip Your Negative Thoughts
Your life is only limited by your thoughts. Explore the most common negative thoughts you had last year. List them. Now, flip them. i.e. for every negative thought that continues to plague you, flip the story to a more positive version.
VI Create Your 5-year Plan
Imagine it’s 2029 and the last 5 years have been the best 5 years of your life. What does that look like for you? What would have to happen to consider those years stellar?
Be sure to consider the full range of categories to ensure a full life (as per our popular Purpose Planner). What would your best life look like in each of these categories:
- Health & Fitness
- Wealth & Finance
- Mission & Vision
- Emotional & Mental
- Growth & Learning
- Intimate/Romantic Relationships
- Family & Friends
- Experiences & Quality of Life
Be specific. Use present tense (i.e. I have vs I want). Don’t say what you don’t want – be sure to focus on calling what you do desire in your life.
VII Determine Next Steps
Review your ‘What does your perfect life look like’ list. Does it include the categories you just completed? If not, be sure to expand your ‘perfect life’ list.
Now go through your list and determine what your next step would be to get there. i.e. the next level on the road to that ultimate dream perfect life. We often make the mistake of assuming we need to jump from our current situation to our perfect situation without considering the steps on the journey. This causes unnecessary frustration and increases the likelihood of abandoning the journey altogether. Simply establish what each next step is and step into that reality.
Close your eyes and claim your gratitude for that next level as if you’re already there.
Consider the adversity you may face. Embrace the potential obstacles. Treat them as gifts. Recognize that the biggest obstacles we face are often the stories we tell ourselves. i.e. I’m too old; too young; too inexperienced; too experienced; not enough, etc. Let go of stories that don’t serve you.
VIII Let Go of Control
Letting go of the NEED to control creates a feeling of greater control. Remind yourself that you have no need to impress anyone or fit in. Resistance creates stress. Speak the language of results.
