Does playing small stop you from getting the success you deserve? If so, you’re not alone. From a young age, girls are conditioned to make themselves smaller. From toning down our voice, our dress, our egos, our self-expression, our demands … Heck, we’re even pressured to make ourselves as physically small as possible. The diet industry is a multi-billion-dollar industry for a reason. And if it wasn’t bad enough already, we even have size zero clothing for women now. As if we’re not only expected to diminish ourselves, but to strive to be invisible and disappear altogether.
This is not the case for young boys. In fact, while young boys gain social status by making themselves larger than life, young girls quickly learn that we’ll face social shunning if we step into our power and seek to make ourselves larger. And so, we’re conditioned early to be self-effacing if not outright self-deprecating. We shame ourselves (and other women) about our physical attributes, our life choices … even our exuberance. We change our very sense of self for fear of being judged as too bitchy, too trashy, or just plain too much.
- Hesitate to ask for what you want?
- Worry if you’re good enough and have enough to offer?
- Have a problem saying ‘no’ and setting boundaries?
- Find it hard to speak out or speak up for yourself?
- Want more and feel you’re capable of more, but somehow you’re not realizing your full potential?
If so, you’re playing smaller than you’re capable of.
Playing small prevents you from reaching your goals and your vision for your future. Doubting yourself and your capabilities is an energy suck and holds you back from soaring. Every time you don’t ask for what you want, say ‘yes’ when you want to say ‘no’, or shrink back from doing what you really want, you cut yourself down. Showing up for yourself becomes harder. You’re left feeling frustrated, empty and exhausted.
This is not your fault. Women have been conditioned for generations to play small. You still get these messages – in movies, media and the world around you. Some of the messages are overt and others more subtle. But they affect you either way! This usually happens unconsciously which makes it even harder to stop shrinking yourself – you can’t change what you’re not aware of.
Are you ready to bust the myths and conditioning that hold you back? Are you ready to silence that conditioned little girl from the schoolyard who whispers in your ear that you better not think too much of yourself or there will be social consequences? When you listen to her, you make yourself a little less-than … you believe you’re a little less than. And as a result, you end up getting less than you deserve in life, both personally and professionally.
